Workshop #14: Hashtags (I might make a few people mad)

Oct. 04, 2024

This is going to be another one that I should preface with “this might be an unpopular opinion but I’m going to say it anyway”…

I am bringing this topic up early because in the last few months, the dozens of planning groups that I am part of on Facebook have become overrun by requests to help generate a hashtag. Before tears of frustration drip into your coffee because your new last name doesn’t equate something clever and catchy, please ask yourself these questions:

  • Do more than 50% of your guest list know what a hashtag is or how to correctly use it? Chances are, nope. You are likely throwing yourself into a tizzy trying to come up with a hashtag that will be used by less than half a dozen people at your wedding.
  • Are you using a photo drop app or QR code to collect photos from your guests? Or even a staring FREE Facebook group to post them to? If so, will you even use your own hashtag to search for photos if they’re all being neatly compiled for you in one place?
  • As a wedding guest, how many times have you hash-tagged someone else’s wedding photos, or used their hashtag to search for them after the wedding is over?

If after considering the questions above you are still set on having a hashtag, do your thing! But for the love of everything chocolate and bacon, please don’t ever pay for a hashtag generator. ChatGPT and AI generators are your best source for coming up with a hashtag. Posts on social media will get buried (and likely irritate other group members if that’s not the purpose of the page).
