If you haven’t already been thinking about your wedding aesthetic before getting engaged, I’m betting it’s one of the first things you started thinking about as soon as that ring slid onto your finger! I’m not the one getting married, and I still scroll Lemon8 and Insta for HOURS looking at wedding décor ideas. And yes, of course I have my wedding mood board started (and hidden) on Pinterest for when my day comes.
As you start thinking about how you’re going to bring your vision to life, consider the difference between schemes and themes:
- Scheme: think color scheme or palette
- Theme: think motif or a subject that décor, bouquets and special touches will be designed around. Often, a theme is based around current trends (shabby chic, rustic farm, old Hollywood glam, etc.). Themes can also be based upon something important to the couple (Disney, Harry Potter, his & hers NFL teams, travel… I’ve seen quite the variety!). Have fun with it! Themes are your chance to personalize your big day!
Do all wedding have a scheme? Yes, even if you don’t call it that or realize that you’ve selected one. Do all weddings have a theme? Not necessarily. You can absolutely design your wedding aesthetic based solely on a color scheme.
Once your color scheme is selected, I recommend visiting an online color palette generator or Canva to make a document that you can carry with you (physically or on your phone). While out shopping for décor or meeting with your florist, you’ll have a sample of colors handy! Also helpful- if ordering from online bridesmaid dress retailers such as Birdy Grey or Azazie, request fabric samples in your colors to keep in your purse or wallet.
